'Spying in Cold War East Germany'

For a third year in succession I was invited by the Marlborough College Summer School to give a series of 10 talks, spread over five afternoons, on the theme of 'Spying on Cold War East Germany', based on my six years' service in Berlin and the German Democratic Republic (GDR).

Despite most of this material having been classified as Confidential or Secret during the Cold War, it is now possible to expose it to the light of day, revealing an extraordinary era when small Allied Military Liaison Missions patrolled the territory of the GDR collecting information on the capabilities and, where possible, intentions of our Soviet and other Warsaw Pact adversaries.

This course of talks focused primarily on military intelligence operations, but it also looked at the strange saga of Rudolf Hess, the East German regime and its 'Stasi' secret police and the lives of Berliners and of the Allied garrisons in West Berlin.

I have subsequently been invited to repeat this course during the 2017 Marlborough College Summer School.
